Hiram Brinlee, born Dec 25, 1808 died July 28, 1885 in Collin County, Texas. He is listed on the 1840 census of Red River County, Tx and in Collin County.
Hiram Brinlee and his brother George came to Texas in 1824, arriving by wagon train to settle in Hickman's Prairie in the present Bowie County. He received a land grant nine miles northeast of McKinney, where he operated a blacksmith shop, and general store. The foundation is visible at Stony Point. (10)

On the 1850 census he was shown as born in Tennessee. Hiram was listed as a registered voter in Collin County, Texas in 1867 and place of birth, Kentucky. Some records say Virginia. Some believe he could have been born in Mason County, Kentucky.
Hiram went back to Texas in the late 1820's, and settled in the old Mexican Municipality later (Red River County). Hiram later married Elizabeth Ann McKinney Sep 14, 1832 at Miller County, Ar. They lived for a time at Red River County, but moved after the flood in 1838, to near Melissa, Tx., raising a family of eight children. Five sons served in the Civil War.
Hiram farmed and owned a general store near Stony Point, shipping freight to Shreveport, La. He had numerous slaves buried at Brinlee Cemetery; land donated by Hiram, and where he, too is buried along with other Brinlee kin. His wife, Betsy died at Roff, Ok. In 1899 (8)

Two deeds for a cemetery were signed by trustees of the Brinlee Cemetery in 1889. James M. Nichols, W. N. Osborn, and J. Milt Carroll were the trustees. Nichols and Carroll are buried in the cemetery. One deed is with W. S. Osborn and Harriet E. Osborn for an area 50 yards by 20 yards and the other is with W. N. Coffey and Sophronia Coffey for an area 25 yards by 50 yards. One is dated in February and the other in April of 1889. Combined the deeds total about ½ acre of land.
Three of the earliest residents of Collin County are buried in the Brinlee Cemetery
Hiram Brinlee, Josiah Nichols, and his wife Elizabeth Jane Fitzhugh Nichols. The Brinlees buried in this cemetery include Hiram Brinlee, David Francis Brinlee, Hiram C. Brinlee, Charles D. Brinlee, Nancy Elizabeth Brinlee and William Brinlee. Also buried here are daughter Sarah B. Anderson and son-in-law Robert B. Sims and probably son Collin A. Brinlee. S. Hiram Carrol Brinlee was born December 25, 1807, in Tennessee or Kentucky. In 1824 he traveled with the Collin McKinney clan and settled on land around Texarkana, Arkansas, as part of the Wavill's Red River Colony. After a border dispute between the United States and Mexico, the area was declared part of the Republic of Texas. On September 14, 1832, he married Elizabeth Ann McKinney, daughter of Daniel McKinney and niece of Collin McKinney. They lived at Red River Landing in Red River County. On February 2, 1838, he was given 4,428 acres of land by the Republic of Texas for living in the territory before the Republic was founded. The acreage in Collin County was 1622.35 acres. The certificate was not filed until April 10, 1911. The Hiram Brinlee survey is Collin County abstract #30. Most of his children were born there.
In 1844, possibly because of a flood on the Red River, the family moved from Red River County to the Collin County area with Collin McKinney's family and settled at a point about four miles east of present-day Melissa. The Brinlee homestead was just west of the cemetery. Hiram Brinlee ran a general store in the Stony Point/Chambliss area. It is said that parts of the foundation of the store are still visible near the Stony Point Cemetery. All of his sons and sons-in-law fought in the Civil War. He died in 1885. His children took part in the Oklahoma land rush and most of the family moved there. Elizabeth McKinney Brinlee has a memorial stone at the Brinlee Cemetery, but is buried in Oklahoma. (11)

I am a descendant of Hiram Brinlee. He and Elizabeth McKinney had a son named Richard (who married Sarah Pettit and lived near Roff, OK) Sarah and Richard Brinlee had a son named Burl David Brinlee, who was my grandfather. My dad's name was Jesse J. Brinlee. (4)
"Betsy Ann McKinney was about twelve when her parents died in 1825. She and her two minor brothers, Hiram Carroll and George Younger, continued to live in the family home with their eldest brother, Blatchley, as head of the household. He signed the "Register of the Wavell Red River Colony" on August 25, 1830 in which he said he was a single man, head of the household which included a minor sister (Betsy Ann, age 17) and two minor brothers: Hiram Carroll McKinney, age 15 and George Younger McKinney, age 13." S. Hiram Brinlee and Elizabeth McKinney Brinlee (the niece of Collin McKinney) owned 1,625 acres of land in Collin County. Hiram & Elizabeth built and ran a general store, made of logs, at the Stoney Point Community and they donated the land for the Brinlee Cemetery. Hiram Brinlee died July 28, 1885 and was buried in the Brinlee Cemetery where his grave and marker can still be seen. Nearby lie other Brinlees, slaves, friends and neighbors. A memorial stone for Elizabeth Ann (Betsy) McKinney is there too, erected by her great-granddaughter, Bessie Sheppard and others.

We found this cemetery to be in good condition although there are several stones down possibly due to vandalism. The big trees on the East Side of the cemetery have definitely been vandalized. There are several stones that are unreadable and the earliest burial that we noted was in 1859. This is a complete listing of what we found but I suspect through family records that there are several other Brinlees buried here that we couldn't find.(1)

Research Notes: Margaret Leek Brinlee was born Feb 12, 1834, in what was then Red River, TX, but is now Illinois Bend, Montague County, Texas. Her parents were Elizabeth Ann McKinney and Hiram Brinlee. When she was two years old, there was a flood on the Red River and she floated out in a log trough with her parents and three-month-old brother, Richard.
She grew up on the Brinlee Homestead in Collin County, Texas, where she married Robert Brown Sims, of Mississippi, on Sep 15, 1856. To this union were born seven children, all in Collin County. After the death of her husband on July 5, 1889, she made her home with different ones of her children.
She passed away at the home of her youngest son, Ben Sims, at Vineyard, Jack County, Texas on Dec 4, 1910, and is buried in the Wizard Cemetery. Wizard Wells, Jack County, Texas. (1)

This is the family of my great-grandfather (my father's father's father), Hiram Carroll Brinlee, Jr., and his first wife,
Diza Carolina Boone. Hiram was the son of Hiram Carroll Brinlee, Sr., and Elizabeth Ann "Betsey" McKinney, a niece of Collin McKinney.
Diza was the daughter of Alonzo Havington Boone, the granddaughter of Daniel Morgan Boone, and the great-granddaughter of Daniel Boone. On the 1870 census Hiram and Diza are shown in Bates County, Missouri, and on the 1880 census they are back in Collin County, Texas. (6)

Mrs. Susan Brinlee passes away Tuesday afternoon in Plano Mrs. Susan E Brinlee, 98, died at 5:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in Plano after a month's illness. Funeral services will be held in the Plano Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Thursday, Rev. Rev. Arthur J Fineout, officiating, with burial in Restland Memorial Park, Dallas. Turrentine-Jackson Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements. Grandsons are pallbearers.
She was born April 4, 1860, in Tennessee, but had lived in Collin County most of her life. She formerly lived near Anna, and was a member of the Methodist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. K.L. Clinton of Anna; two sons, C.O. Brinlee of Plano, and A.F. Brinlee of Lubbock. Her husband, H.C. Brinlee and a son, preceded her in death. She has 26 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren, there being five generations of her family, prior to her passing. Wednesday, July 30, 1958, pg.8 (1)

DNA testing has shown Wayne is related to a John Johnston. John lives in Australia and his family does not know anything about his family history. Lots of different stories but none proven. His DNA is 5 markers from Wayne's DNA on a 67 marker sample. This would make the Brinlee / Johnston with a common relative approx 4 to 6 generations prior to their births.
